Lots of walking
Kate decided to start walking everywhere on New Years Day. She LOVES to carry things while she walks and is usually found carrying these 2 babies around :)

San Fran trip
We got to go to Cali for Shane's cousins wedding this past weekend!! My parents came to watch the girls (thank you mom and dad VZ!!) so we traveled with mom and dad d, Ryan, Shelly, and baby kacie, and Shane's grandpa and his wife Pauline. It was a great trip!
We loved having a little break from work and parenting :) I also got to meet up with my friend Alex for Starbucks one morning- it was soo great to catch up with her!!!
The guys golfed 1 morning so the ladies went for a 5 mile walk
Rehearsal dinner was at a pizza place- yum!!
Then Saturday we went on a little hike and had a picnic. It was soooo nice to be in the sun and get some exercise outside!
Loving the views!
At the wedding
Shane and his cousin, Annie, the flower girl.
The Kuiper cousins plus the new bride Rachel
It was such a pretty reception place!
They had a great time with grandpa and grandma VZ and Erin loved telling us about all the fun things they did! She has also told me multiple times that she misses them :)

The flight home was during the packer playoff game so Ryan, shelly, and Shane cheered and I just watched :) while we waited for the flight to take off. Coming back to the snow was not fun but we were excited to see Erin and Kate!!

snow fun
We have been going outside a lot lately since the temps are a little warmer. I took the girls out a couple morning last week
Erin loved it and found lots to do!
Kate not so much... :) She can't do much in the snow yet and hated her bunchy snowsuit. Poor 2nd child
Shane has taken Erin out in the evenings a couple times this week too and they have a great time making snow angels and playing together
We also had a Saturday all home together with no plans in the morning (yay!!!) so we had pancakes and went sledding!
Erin's first turn all by herself
She loved it!
The sledding must have tired out both girls because this is how they rode back to the car
And all outside activities in the winter MUST end with hot chocolate. Erin is quite insistent about this and I'm pretty sure the hot chocolate is the reason she wants to go outside in the first place :)

3 day weekend!
We had a 3 day weekend together and tried to make the most of it! Saturday we went to Sheboygan to visit Shane's college roommate and his family. They have a little boy that is a few months younger than Erin and a little girl who is just 1 month older than Kate. The kids loved playing together!
We took them to the children's museum in Sheboygan- it was really cool. Lots of fun exhibits. The fire truck was a favorite!
And so was the ship and fishing area!
The babies just had fun climbing up and down the ramp and talking to each other :) Poor Kate had a bit of a rough outing though and took a couple spills... She will only walk now and doesn't want any help and has a split lip and a bruise on her forehead to prove her independence...
Then on Saturday we went to a local hotel that has a water park in it. Shane's parents gave us Day Passes to the water park for Christmas and we were super excited to go!
Erin loved the slides! And would say "again!!" as soon as she came down :)

Sick girls
Erin and Kate have been really sick the last week and it has not been fun.
Tuesday they were home with Shane while I worked. Poor Erin was sooo miserable with her runny nose and cough.. I actually worked a 12 hour shift on Tuesday (we were short on nurses so they needed extra help) so that I could have Wednesday off so that neither of us would have to miss more work. Very long day but worth it to have Wednesday off.
Coughs, fevers, runny noses, and up a lot during the night crying- this has definitely been the sickest they have been at the same time and it's not fun!!
We have great moms that have been very helpful this week though and I just need to brag about them a little :)
Erin had woken up at 5 am coughing and didn't really go back to sleep so she was exhausted one afternoon. She has a really runny nose and hates it so she has been basically crying every 2 minutes for a Kleenex and add in the lack of sleep and she was a mess. But since she is 3 and has decided that she will not nap she started yelling and crying when I tried to get her to nap. The crying woke Kate up of course so then I had 2 very sick and very tired girls. I called my mom on FaceTime to try to occupy the girls with something different and she had an amazing idea- she said she could tell Erin stories in her room over FaceTime and maybe Erin would fall asleep! I didn't know if it would work and I felt bad that my mom would waste her time but she wanted to try so we gave it a shot- and it worked!! I check on Erin after like 20 minutes and she was sound asleep!! My mom was still reading a story to her because she couldn't see if Erin was sleeping or not so I took the phone and Erin kept right on sleeping! It was sooo great that Erin got a nap in and I got to give Kate some extra attention!! Yay for FaceTime and being a long distance grandma :)
And when I had to work this weekend Shane's mom brought over some meals which helped a ton since cooking with sick babies is impossible!! Plus her cooking is amazing (Shane has always been great at eating all my cooking and never complains but he has also made it clear that he loves his moms cooking most of all :)
Thankgoodness for moms!!

One year ago I went to sleep on my 30th birthday never EVER dreaming that I would have a baby girl by morning time. My due date was February 10 so the fact that it was still January made it seem like labor was still a ways away.
The Dooyema ladies 1 year ago
Shane and his girls- Erin was excited to meet her baby sister :)
Shane and I rarely talk about that night in detail- the few times we have we both ended up feeling really anxious and panicked and had to stop talking about it :)
I did just recently look back at my contractions on my ipad app (it's surprisingly saved on there 1 year later!!) because I still feel like I should have been more prepared....
Here's a quick look at the mornings contractions again in case you think I'm crazy :)
So from 2:41am to 3:43am I only had 2 contractions!! How is it even possible to have only 2 contractions in an hour and still be in labor? Confusing right?! And a lot of the other contractions were kind of all over the place too. Starting at 4:30am I had an 8 minute break between contractions followed by a 12 minute break and then a 7 minute break (this brings us to 5am just for time reference :) These contractions were very manageable as far as pain/intensity goes as well. I've never heard of such sporadic contractions with minimal pain so close to a babies birth. My doctor (and everyone who I have ever talked to about labor) had said that contractions become regular in real labor... And all of these contractions were far from regular and I wouldn't even say they were painful. They were stronger than my previous MONTHS of Braxton-hicks contractions which is why I was out of bed and timing them but even thinking back about them I am still in shock with how quickly things progressed....
Then from 5-5:30am I decided that this was the real deal since they were getting stronger and more regular so we called my Dr. and Shane's mom. Then right when I called my doctor at 5:30 all of a sudden the contractions became TERRIBLE and super close together and I couldn't even describe to Shane what was happening. Somehow I got into the car (there may have been some yelling involved :) and then 7 minutes later Kate was born! Only 7 MINUTES from when Shane called his mom in our driveway to when he called 911 and Kate was already born (at 5:55am)!! Thats crazy right?!?!
The more I think about it though the more thankful I am that she is ok. Birth is such an amazing process but it is definitely not without risk and I am so thankful that there were no complications during Kate's birth for her or I.
I only have clear memories of a few brief moments and I specifically remember asking Shane probably 3 different times in like 10 seconds if the cord was around her neck- I was really panicked in that moment because I couldn't see her neck. Shane did a great job of staying calm and following my instructions and has now officially gotten over all of his squimish feelings related to blood and health issues- Open heart surgery and delivering your own baby make you face your fears pretty quickly :)

Kate Rebecca has been a joy from day one and is always making us smile. She is active and quick and has her own ideas of what's going to happen which is exactly like her birth. We are so thankful that God kept both her and I safe during her birth. What a day and what a special little girl!

12 months
She's one!! Kate is walking everywhere, babbling tons, saying "dada" to Shane (maybe a a few mamas?! Maybe?!!? :) eating everything, and looking so big! She started walking on New Years Day at 11 months and 1 day old. I can remember being concerned that her neck strength was so far behind when she was like 2 and 3 months old and thinking she was going to be a really laid-back and chill toddler since she was such a happy/lazy baby. She is still pretty chill and definitely happy but she is way more active than I thought she would be at 12 months. Thankfully she usually plays really well by herself! She was definitely not a fan of the pics this month so I didn't get any smiles...
She is very busy and is always carrying something around and walking in circles. Her favorite foods are bread, pasta, all fruit, cheese, zucchini, sweet potato and actually I can't think of a food she doesn't like... Kate's appetite was HUGE for a couple weeks but has diminished some with this bad cold. She continues to nurse or have a 6oz bottle 4x/day usually... I say usually because she does great nursing when I'm home but has been refusing bottles and being really picky with them again just like when she was little... Man it's frustrating!! And she won't drink much out of her sippy cup either. Stinker! I have no idea how she is going to do with the transition to whole milk...
Kate continues to sleep well from 7:30pm-7:30am with a 2.5hr nap most days from 12:30-3ish. She's spoiled and gets nursed and rocked to sleep whenever I'm home with her... I just love when she falls asleep on my shoulder :)
I'd say she is slightly more of a mamas girl lately but loves being by Shane too. She points to the family picture on our fireplace mantel at least 3x/day and says "dadada" and looks for Shane :) Erin and Kate have been really cute towards each other lately too. They have little giggling and fun screaming sessions together and when they scream in their high-pitched voices they sound exactly alike!!
Kate loves baths, baby dolls, putting everything in her mouth, giving us hugs, books, and walking. She does not like being put in her carseat, having toys taken away from her, loud noises, or being told no. She also knows exactly what she wants or doesn't want and can let out quite a cry when she gets upset! This usually only happens if Erin takes a toy she wants or if I set her down when she wants to be held.
Kate has another bad cold this month and seems to get sick pretty frequently... Her habit of putting everything in her mouth is definitely part of the problem along with the fact that she has an older sister who shares all her germs with her. This winter has been full of sickness at our house and I can't wait for summer and hopefully less illnesses!! She even got to end her birthday weekend with her first episode of vomiting... so sad! We had a bunch of friends over to watch the Super Bowl and while I was putting her to bed she threw up ALLLL over me. So much puke. She never really acted that sick before or after so she got a bath and nursed a little more and went right to sleep. She was up a couple times overnight crying which she never does so she slept on my shoulder a majority of the night and then had a pretty gross diaper this am. So yea her stomach is not quite right- poor baby!! Hopefully she better soon!!
Kate loves to cuddle and will often play by herself for a few minutes and then come over to give us a hug and then toddle off to play again and then keeps repeating that cycle. She is at the great age where she's still our baby but yet is learning fun things all the time!!

Kate's 1st birthday
We started out Kate's birthday with a drive to her roundabout
Not quite as exciting of a drive as last year thankfully :)
Then we went to The Big Backyard (an indoor play place) both girls had a great time!! Then Panera for lunch and we got lots of smiles from our sweet 1 year old :)
Then we had a little family birthday party for her. Grandpa and Grandma Dooyema, Uncle Ryan and Auntie Shelly, cousins Addison, Emily, Hailey, and Kacie, and Grandpa and Grandma Van Zanten. She loved the gifts and actually got really excited for each one!
Kate was very interested in her new chair and definitely knows that the purple chair is hers!
She has carried this new baby around constantly- Kate is definitely a baby lover! She has also suddenly developed a little attitude and yesterday when Erin tried to play with this baby Kate started making mean grunting noises at Her and tried to take it away from her... She seems so young to have an attitude already!!!
Our birthday girl with her 1 cake!
Sisters :) Erin wanted to help Kate eat her cake and made sure to "help" Kate open each of her gifts too :)
Happy girl with her cake! She was slow to eat the cake and just barely touched the frosting for the first few minutes but then ate some. She definitely didn't devour it though and really only had a few bites of cake and some of the frosting.
She still made a nice mess though :)
With Grandpa and Grandma Dooyema
All the Dooyema cousins. I've been seeing that people are recreating old pictures on Facebook and I think this picture would be so fun to recreate in like 20 years!! Wouldn't that be so funny!!?
with Grandpa and Grandma VZ
We got Kate these plastic animals and she loves them! She loves animals and chewing on things so these are perfect!
There was a lot of reading books over the weekend which both girls love! It was so nice that both grandparents could be here and it was such a fun weekend celebrating our baby (and my birthday a little bit too :)

Arizona!!
Arizona in the middle of cold February is amazing! We had a great time with Shane parents seeing their new condos, doing some hiking, eating out, swimming, played in the sun, and watching the girls love being outside! There are tons of pics below since we had such a great time!

Once we got there everyone went straight to bed but then we got up early the next day to start the fun in the sun! This was Kate's first experience with sand since she started walking. She was timid for about 30 seconds but then loved it! She loved it so much that she tried to eat it a couple times too (along with every thing else she saw outside... rocks, sticks, grass) yuck!
We also found this great splash park just down the road and both girls thought it was the best thing ever!
Kate had no fear of the water and was walking all over getting soaking wet
And Erin loved running through the sprinklers
In-n-out burger for supper! Yum!
Then later that night we met our friends, Ben and Leah, who were also in Arizona visiting her parents. How crazy that we were only 15 minutes away from each other all the way in Arizona! So fun to be able to see them!We went to a butterfly garden the next day and it was really cool! There were tons of butterflies and they loved to land on us.
Erin got to watch her first movie in a theatre (it was only 15 minutes) about the life cycle of butterflies at the garden. It was a 3-D movie and she kept pointing and reaching her hand out to try to touch butterflies. She even said "they are in here mom!!" :)Erin was sure to let us know if we were close to stepping on them- she wanted to keep them safe!
Kate liked the pretty flowers too. She's not used to seeing green plants or flowers in the middle of winter!
Grandpa butterfly and Erin caterpillar :)
The guys went golfing a couple times and had great weather!
We made sure to get some ice cream at the old fashioned Sugar Bowl in Old Town Scottsdale. Grandma Dooyema and Erin share a love of chocolate and ice cream :)Then Friday night we met up with Ben and Leah again. The grandparents went out to dinner to have some time away from their very busy grandkids :) So we got pizza at Leah's parents house and just hung out. This was supposed to be a sunset picture but it didn't quite work out :)
Conner, Haddie, Kate, and Erin after our golf cart ride. The kids loved the ride!
Saturday morning Mom and Dad D babysat so that Shane and I could hike (thank you!!!). We hiked up Camelback Mountain again this year- we did this hike 2 years ago when we were in Arizona and loved it. Its a super challenging hike with lots of rock climbing and an amazing view of the city at the top.

Saturday night we met some of Shane's extended family at a cowboy ranch. Love this cowboy and cowgirl :)
Sunday we did a little hike with the whole family
I love this pic- the shadows made it really dark though and trying to lighten it made the colors kinda funny...
My little hiking buddy :) She liked looking around and then fell asleep on the hike back to the car.The pool was right next to the condo and we went there most days. Kate loved the water and did great!
Erin had an amazing time in the pool. She wanted to swim all the time and loved everything!
Poolside picnic for our family. Such a fun trip! The warm weather felt so great and coming back to the cold here was quite a shock. The girls did really well overall and our only issues with them were 3 year old attitude problems when Erin was over tired, severe diaper rash and a few days of terrible diapers for Kate (her stomach has been off since her birthday... poor thing!!), and trying to chase Kate around making sure she doesn't eat everything outside or walk straight into the pool (she has no fear!!) while still having fun with Erin. They both loved being outside and swimming and we are so glad that we had the opportunity to go!

12 month stats
We had kates 1 year appointment a bit late since her dr was on vacation and then we were on vacation. So here are her stats now:
Height- 30 inches (71th%)
Weight- 21 lbs 15oz (77th%)
She's doing well overall. Eating well, sleeping well, drinking bottles well again thankfully :), but she's not drinking whole milk yet. We need to start that soon.
She also graduated to the big girl car seat instead of the baby carseat so that means she gets to ride in the grocery cart with her big sister now instead of staying in the baby carseat! She loves it:)

End of an era x2
My trusty old stethoscope that I got in nursing school in 2003 (yikes how have I been a nurse for so long?!?!!) listened to its last patient this week. It was completely bent from being around my neck all the time and would no longer straighten at all. I took it off to listen to someone's lungs and it cracked and totally stopped working. The pic below is my old curved stethoscope and my new straight one :) It served me well and I can't even begin to think about how many different people it listened to over all these years...
The 2nd end of an era is for my pump. I'm done pumping at work- yay!! I'm very thankful that I was able to find time to pump during every. single. workday (thank goodness for helpful co-workers!!) but am very glad to be done. I'm planning to keep nursing Kate in the morning and at bedtime but not anymore during the day. I really can't believe she's 1 already!!

Playing outside!
We are loving the spring weather the last couple days!!
We had our friend Bennett over for an afternoon and both girls loved playing with him outside!
Kate and her first car ride! She also seemed to think that this car was only for her because whenever Erin or Bennett would ride in it she got quite upset :) I smile now because 13 month tantrums are nothing compared to 3.5 year old tantrums!! :)
They had fun filling the basket with some a couple times over. Very important work :)
The next day we went outside again in the evening after work and Kate got to do the slide for the first time.... And then proceeded to want to do it another 100x :) She would just grunt and point and fuss until we helped her do it again and again. This girl was on a mission!!
And later she fell face first into the ground and then ate her mud covered mittens. Could be a very messy and dirt filled spring/summer :)

Weekend fun with dad
Shane likes to take the girls on fun outings on the weekends that I work and a few weeks ago he took them to the Humane Society to see the dogs there.
Very excited girls!! :)

Vz's visit
This post is a bit old now cause I'm behind but.... we've got some big changes coming which I'm trying to form into a future blog post. Lots of emotions. Stay tuned!
My parents came to visit a few weeks ago and it was great to see them. Our regular babysitter was out of town so they came to babysit during my 2 work days that week.
The girls had a great time
Grandpa vz giving Kate her bottle. She is finally drinking whole milk now during the day. Only took us about 2 months to transition her off breastmilk/formula to whole milk.... She's not a big fan of change if you couldn't tell :)
Lots of fun while mom and dad worked :)
Grandpa VZ even got to play magnetic dress-up dolls!!Then on Friday I was off work so we went to the zoo! The cows were a big hit...
But the playground was even better :) Erin loves playgrounds this spring already and I can't wait to see her play more this summer. She has become much more brave and even makes new little friends at some of the places we go!
And Kate has absolutely no fear. She would walk right down the slide, hug every baby or animal in sight, and wander every where by all by herself. Then after my parents had left we went for a bike ride to the elementary school park by our house. Shane got a little tired pulling both girls :)
And the girls had more park fun. We loved the warmer weather and are wishing it would come back!!↧
